OEM and Private Label Furniture Manufacturing: A Guide for European Brands
For furniture brands, retailers and interior designers looking to develop their own product line, OEM and private label manufacturing offer a direct route to market without building a factory.
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but there is a meaningful difference.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you provide the design — technical drawings, material specifications, finish requirements — and the manufacturer produces it under your brand. You own the design; the factory executes it.
Private label typically means you select products from the manufacturer’s existing range and sell them under your own brand. You apply your labelling, packaging and positioning, but the design and tooling belong to the factory.
At BOSA Contract, we work with both models, and with hybrid arrangements where a client starts from one of our existing constructions and adapts it to their specification.
Why European Brands Choose Contract Manufacturing in Bosnia
Bosnia and Herzegovina sits at the intersection of European proximity and competitive production costs. It is not a low-cost destination in the way that Southeast Asia is — and that is the point.
Lead times from Bosnia to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands or Scandinavia are measured in days, not months. Communication happens in the same time zones. Production standards meet EU requirements without the quality-control overhead that long-distance sourcing demands.
For brands that have worked with Asian manufacturers and dealt with inconsistent quality, long freight times and communication delays, Bosnia-based production typically reduces risk considerably.

What OEM Production Requires
To begin OEM production, a brand typically provides:
- Technical drawings with dimensions, tolerances and joinery details
- Material specifications — wood species, grade, moisture content targets
- Finish specifications — oil, lacquer, wax or stain references with RAL or NCS codes where applicable
- Packaging requirements — carton specifications, protection standards, labelling positions
- Target price range — to calibrate production decisions from the start
If drawings are not yet complete, a manufacturer with genuine technical capability can assist with drawing review, design-for-manufacturing feedback and sample development.
We always review incoming technical drawings before quoting. A drawing that looks correct on paper may contain details that are expensive or impossible to produce at scale. Identifying those issues before production begins saves both time and money.
What Private Label Production Requires
For private label, the process is simpler. You select products from our existing portfolio — solid wood tables, chairs, benches, storage units — and specify:
- your preferred wood species and finish from our standard options
- any labelling or packaging requirements
- quantities per SKU
- delivery schedule
We can apply your brand labels, adjust standard finishes within our production range, and ship in your specified packaging. For retailers and online furniture brands without in-house design capability, private label is typically the fastest route from decision to product.
Sample and Pre-Production Process
Whether OEM or private label, the process before series production follows the same basic structure:
1. Specification review and quotation We review your drawings or product selection, identify any issues, and provide a quotation covering unit price, tooling costs (if any) and lead time.
2. Pre-production sample (PPS) Before any series production, we produce a pre-production sample for your approval. This is a critical step. A PPS confirms construction, dimensions, finish quality and assembly — and gives you a physical reference point for all subsequent production.
3. Sample approval and production release Once you approve the sample — which may involve one round of revisions — we schedule series production.
4. Quality control and shipment Finished goods are inspected against the approved sample before packing. We coordinate freight to your warehouse, typically by road freight for European destinations.
Minimum Order Quantities
MOQ varies by product type and construction complexity.
For standard solid wood furniture — dining tables, chairs, benches — MOQ typically starts at 20–50 units per SKU. Products requiring significant tooling investment may have higher minimums to amortise those costs.
For private label selections from our existing range, MOQ can be lower because no tooling investment is required.
The right MOQ for your situation depends on your business model, storage capacity and sell-through expectations. We are willing to discuss this honestly and find an arrangement that works at your actual volume.
What to Look for in a Manufacturing Partner
Whether you work with BOSA or another manufacturer, a few qualities matter above all others:
- Transparency about production capability — a good manufacturer tells you what they cannot do, not just what they can
- Technical engagement — they ask questions about your drawings, not just your quantity
- Sample discipline — they produce samples before committing to series production, always
- Communication — a single point of contact who understands both the production side and the commercial side
Get in touch if you have a project you would like to discuss. We are direct: if your product is a good fit for our production capability, we will tell you. If it is not, we will tell you that too.

FSC Certification and Material Traceability
For brands selling into markets where certified materials matter — particularly in Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands — FSC 100% certification provides documented chain of custody from forest to finished product.
At BOSA, all production uses FSC 100% certified solid European oak and other certified timber species. We can provide FSC certificates alongside shipping documentation. For brands that require this for their own certification claims or retail requirements, this is a standard part of our documentation package.
Summary
OEM and private label manufacturing from Bosnia offers European furniture brands a practical combination: production at EU standards, short freight distances, and competitive unit costs relative to Western European manufacturing.
The key to making it work is choosing a partner with genuine technical capability, not just a price list. The sample and pre-production process is where most problems are caught — or where they are missed. Choose a manufacturer who takes that process seriously.
